Why there's so much drama around fursuits

Why is there so much drama surrounding fursuits and fursuiters? I've seen several people post comments like, "they're just animal costumes." And I can't agree more. However, to others they represent more. Sometimes MUCH more.

For a select few it's their job. However since for the heavy hitters of fursuit studios, there really is no concern over a lack or demand. For some of the smaller studios though, this may be a concern. Albeit a good reason, this probably makes up less then 1% of the drama so it is almost void.

To fully answer this question, one must deviate into what exactly a "typical furry" is. Furry is a nerdish / science fiction based fandom. It is full of socially awkward, possibly unaccepted in society people, mainly males. Another section that must be noted is the "weird, misunderstood artist." Obviously this doesnt lump EVERYONE into one category, but I believe for this purpose can be used as a generalization.

Point being is most furries have some sort of self image deficiency. Everyone has a level self consciousness, but being a nerdy/ fantasy based fandom, I believe the percentage is most likely higher then normal everyday life. So what does all this have to do with fursuit drama? Well, most furries that create a fursona or character put alot of themselves into it. Most are based somewhat directly off the person that created it. It's no secret than in a drawing or in a fursuit, you become your character, whatever it is that you created. You're not you, but rather something different, something new, something... better. For myself, Im a fairly reserved personality, but when I get into a bright blue dog costume, I enjoy playing a character that is much more "friendly" and outgoing. I do things I would never consider doing out of suit.

When you mix people with some sort of chip on their shoulder, with something they put a lot of themselves into to create something more desirable to be, it's really a recipe for disaster. Like most fantasy based subcultures, people get sucked into them or their new persona very easily. Haven't any of you watched a friend get caught up into WOW, or RP'ing, or LARPING, or even just into furry?

When you input this much passion into something that represents yourself, people are more likely to defend it. Its an extension of themselves. It's their "place." It's their "home." For many of us, it's more then just an "animal costume." Some people spend 10's of thousands of dollars commissioning art and costumes, that's how important it is to them. For that scene on paper, or that 80 minutes in character in suit, they truly are exactly what they want to be. It can be very empowering.

However, at the end of the day, it is just an animal costume. They are just drawings. They are just cartoon characters you created. Maybe it is your escape. Maybe you feel like you belong here. But when it all comes down to it, furry in it's simplest form is a hobby. A childish one too. While it may represent something more, or a chance to escape, or a way to fix a problem in your daily life, it's still cartoons and animal costumes.

worst golf experience ever

So as some of you may have known, the AZ Amateur started Monday. Of my 9 years of competitive golf, it ended up being the worst tournament I have ever played it. The night before I was out hitting a few balls getting ready. About 5 minutes into warming up, my wedge snapped underneath the grip on my downswing. Not the best thing to happen the night before the biggest tournament of the year.

So, the next day I make the 90 minute drive down there no problem. About 30 minutes to my tee time the calm breeze turned into a violent 30+ mph dusty, gusty sandstorm. So the course was playing aprox 4-5 strokes harder then the morning wave with their ideal calm condition. Not too mention the high was 115 for the afternoon wave.

I played ok my front side but started to get a massive headache by the turn. I stumbled through the rest of my round not wanting to quit. I've only withdrawn from one tournament my entire life due to the stomach flu. So I finish, sign my card and get into the air conditioned rooms. I got myself a giant glass of water and started drinking as much as I could. After about a half a cup I started feeling worse and relocated to the bathroom. By that time I felt so weak and queasy I was sitting on the floor next to the toilet. The AGA staff found me and called the EMT. I threw up what water I had managed to drink by the time the EMT arrived. They hooked up all sorts of stuff to me checking my blood pressure and glucose levels. I was pretty out of it, but needless to say it was pretty embarrassing. By the time they finally left it was about 7pm and the course was closing. Luckily the AGA people stuck around to keep an eye on me until I was well enough to dive back to where I was staying.

So in conclusion, I'm down a club, shot my 3rd worst competitive round ever, had the EMT's called, and withdrew from only the 2nd tournament ever.

Yay golf. At least I lost 8 pounds in 48 hours.

Ok, this applies anyone who's into fursuiting in anyway. So apparently, I really really high percentage of the people I have personally asked have fit into one of these categories. I'm really curious if it's like that to all furries, or if it's just coincidence since i've only really asked like maybe 10 ppl. So, here goes.

Again, this only applies to furries interested in fursuits or fursuiting.

View Poll: furry theory test

Furry Psychology 101: types of furry

So I have been interested in furry for almost 10 years now. It's a very dynamic group of people and interests. It's changed and molded and spawned new sub genres over the years. However, while furry is truly defined as "anthropomorphic animals," that actually covers a wide variety of things. As I'm sure all of you have discovered, there are many different types of furries. After some deliberation, I think I have been able to break it down into 11 specific and unique categories. Each one is all apart of furry, but unique from the others in some way. Every part of furry (at least the ones I'm aware of) all fit into one of these categories. It seems most people I have shown this too primarily fit into either one or two of these. I know some of you may like all of them, but there's still probably one that stands out or was your link to furryism.

With some much needed graphic help from Lucky Wolf, enjoy. Where do you all fit in?
